Affiliate marketing programs are programs that allow webmasters to sell products for other companies and receive a commission for their efforts. Affiliates advertise for the manufacturer or producer of an item. Instead of charging an advertising fee up front, the affiliate receives a commission on each item that is sold from his website.

If you are a website owner, you would partner with the manufacturer or producer of an item. Most of these companies will already have an affiliate program in place. You simply apply to the company and they will approve or disapprove your site as a place to sell their items. What would make them approve or disapprove?

If you are a manufacturer or a producer of a product, you will set up your own affiliate program which will allow you to get free advertising on your affiliate partners website to sell your item. There are also companies that will set up a program for you and take a percentage of the sale in exchange for finding your affiliates and running your affiliate program. How do you set up your own affiliate marketing program?

Can you really make money with affiliate marketing programs?

YES! There is tons of money to be made with affiliate programs. If you have a good website that has lots of traffic, you can make a very hefty living by selling other peoples products. Many successful affiliates don't have a product of their own to sell. I don't. They make their entire living off other companies products. It is so easy to set the links up and start making money. Unfortunately, most webmasters who try this, fail miserably at it.

So why do most people fail with affiliate marketing programs?

The secret in successful affiliate marketing is to have a website that is worth going to. You can't just have page after page of affiliate links. Why would anyone even come to your site, let alone stay long enough to buy anything? Content is the 'secret' ingredient. It's not even a well guarded secret. Go to any website that offers marketing tips and you will hear it over and over again. You must have content!

Read this story and you will begin to understand why content is so important.

Let's pretend there are ten stores in your neighborhood all selling basically the same items for roughly the same price. Nine of these stores have very little staff. You rarely see anyone until you get to the check out counter. If you do get lucky enough to find a sales person, when you ask your question, they hand you five or six products and scream, "buy these", and run away. At the check out counter you ask the person a question and they just stare at you with their hand out waiting for you to pay.

The tenth store has a lot of helpful, knowledgeable staff. They are eager to answer your questions and they seem to know what they are talking about. They lead you in the direction of the item that is right for you and offer you suggestions on why this item will help you. They consider your individual situation and possibly have a couple other items that may work well for you. The person at the checkout counter makes sure you have what you need and pleasantly answers any additional questions you may have.

Remember, all these store have basically the same types of items for roughly the same price. Where are you going to shop? If the tenth store had prices that were even a little higher than the other stores, would you still pick them? Probably.

Your website is your store, only you are not competing with nine other stores, more like 900,000. You have to be better than the rest or forget even wasting your time. Sound a little harsh? Sorry if I burst your bubble. This is the hard reality of the internet and why most people don't make it.

You have to have content and it has to be good content. People want to know you. They want to hear what you have to say about the situation and/or the product. They need to feel they can trust your suggestions. Content gives them your prospective and allows them to hear your views. A page full of links shows them that you could care less about them. All you want is their money and they aren't going to give you any of it.
