So you bought a
Ready Made Website
or
Ready Made Template and have
absolutely no idea what to do next!
After you download your package, you must
unzip the folder.
(If you downloaded both html and php websites,
use the html version. Php is not for beginners.)
Right click on the folder on your desktop
and select 'extract'. This will create a new folder that
contains all the files. (All
download files require an unzip program to open them. You
probably have this software on your computer already. If you
don't you can get a
free program here.)
Do not rearrange these files, they must stay in
the folders they are in for the site to work properly.
If you don't have your domain name or hosting yet, do
that first:

Once you have your domain name purchased and
hosting secured, continue:
The best way to upload your site to your
server is to use
CuteFTP <-- click on the link to start your free
download. Download it to your desktop. This is a free
version of this software. It has a free 30 day trial. After
the 30 days expires, you will see a banner on the software
as you use it. This banner will not transfer to your
website.
After you download this software, you will
see an icon on your desktop that says cuteftp.exe. Double
click on that icon and follow the instructions for
installation. When installation is complete, you can delete
the original icon as it will be replaced with a new shortcut
icon for you to use the software.
Double click on the new icon that says
CuteFTP. This will open this program. In the upper left hand
corner of the program you will see a little picture of an
open book. If you hover over this picture with your mouse,
it will say Site Manager. Click on this picture and a new
little form will open. It will look like this:

Click on the Add site button and a new form
will open that looks like this:

You will fill in the following entries ONLY:
-
Site Label - Put what ever you want here
for your site name.
-
Host Address - Put your IP address here,
(this will only be numbers and dots. Like this -
71.97.12.254). Your host should have sent you this with
your hosting plan set up information. If you don't know
it, write to your host and they will tell you what it
is. If you are using my hosting, it is in the email you
received which was titled "Your setup
information from Knowitall-Webhosting.com"
-
User ID - Your hosting ID from your
setup email.
-
Password - Your hosting password from
your setup email.
It should look like this:

Leave all the other settings alone and click
OK. You will now see this:

Double click on Your Site Name in the box on
the right. This should open your website in CuteFTP. If you
get an error message double check your id and password. Now
you will see a screen similar to this:

Next we will find your site to upload on
your computer and put it in the proper file on the server.

The program is set up with all your computer
files on the left side of the screen and all the server
files on the right side.
Click on the little yellow folder,
underlined in red in my example above, to locate the files
you want to upload. Usually you will find downloaded files
on your desktop or in your Documents folder.
When you locate the folder that contains
your unzipped version of the website, double click on the
folder to open it. You should see folders called images,
includes, and a bunch of htm files. When you see this you
are in the right place.
Next, double click on the public_html folder
on your server side of the screen. If you have created a sub
domain for this site, double click on the folder that has
your sub domain name. If this is a sub domain, there may be
an images folder in the sub domain. Right click on the
images folder on your server side - right side - of
the screen and select delete.
Next, highlight all the files on the left
side of the screen. To do this, click on the top folder and
hold down your shift key while you use the down button on
your keyboard to scroll down through all the files. Once
they are all highlighted, drag them over to the right,
server side, of your screen.
A screen will pop up asking you if you want
to upload all these files, select yes.
Once the upload is done, you can close
CuteFTP.
Your website is now on your server.
